Sunflowers & Desert

Photography Now & Then #138

Just a month from the summer solstice, spring here in Arkansas has settled into a summerlike pattern – warm and humid with a chance of afternoon showers.  Highs, though, have been in the 80s, with 90°F here and there.  The spring blossoms are almost all gone.  Some summer flowers are blooming, but it’s still a tad early for many.

Located just to the northeast of Navajo Point, where this photo was taken and the highest vista on the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, Desert View Watchtower is perched on the rim near the east entrance to the park. The 70-foot (21 m)-high stone building was completed in 1932, was designed by American architect Mary Colter, an employee of the Fred Harvey Company who also created and designed many other buildings in the Grand Canyon vicinity.1
