Spools & Sharp

Photography Now & Then #54

A different view of Karen’s thread cabinet than I used last month, in Photography Now & Then #23, January 23, 2018.

Today’s photo[1]: Spools of thread in a Gütermann thread cabinet. February 23, 2018 (Apple iPhone 6s)

The cabinet holds 100 spools and, with her quilting and other projects, finding the right color for a project is a snap.  The thread on these spools isn’t the only thread that she uses by any means, but the cabinet is an often used resource.

The deep blue of Lake Yellowstone contrasts against the lighter blue of the sky and and the pale geothermal travertine deposits on the shore.

Travertine3

Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs, especially hot springs. Travertine often has a fibrous or concentric appearance and exists in white, tan, cream-colored, and even rusty varieties. It is formed by a process of rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate, often at the mouth of a hot spring or in a limestone cave.

In the U.S., the most well-known place for travertine formation is Yellowstone National Park, where the geothermal areas are rich in travertine deposits.
