Blue & Fresh

Photography Now & Then #115

Today was a mild spring day with a high of 66°F.  It appears that the weather is getting to be more like normal for this time of year instead of cooler than normal.  Of course, we wouldn’t mind cooler than normal weather in a couple of months when we are getting into the depths of a southern summer.

Sometimes you just have adverse weather.

We were in Rocky Mountain National Park in September 2011.  It had been cloudy and rainy on the 14th, but we had driven across the park over Trail Ridge Road to Grand Lake where we did a little shopping and had lunch. On the way back to our camper and Moraine Park, we ran into very heavy fog.  Around 3 pm, we stopped at Trail Ridge Gift Store – next to the Alpine Visitor Center at 12,000 feet – for a coffee break. Unfortunately, it was already closed, probably due to the degrading weather conditions.  It had been in the 60s in Grand Lake, but in the Alpine Visitor Center parking lot, it was 35°F, foggy and rain.

We made it down off Trail Ridge Road in plenty of time, but, just a few hours later, it was closed due to snow.  If we’d had to turn back from where they would have closed the road – Milner Pass –, it would have taken 4 hours and 160 miles to get back to the campground that was only about 26 miles away through the park.
