Mt. Rushmore, South Dakota

(Audio: Pious Reflection by Paul Mottram)

One of our first stops on our 2007 trip, after visiting family in Nebraska, was the Black Hills of South Dakota.  While there, we visited Mount Rushmore national Monument.

We had stopped at Mount Rushmore once in the late 80s.  We were on our way home from vacationing in Wyoming and Idaho and our visit to Rushmore was a hurried afterthought.

This trip, we took our time and got the full benefit of the visit.  Mount Rushmore is worth seeing.

We are planning a family trip in the same area. Great pictures!

Are there any places that you would recommend checking out with three teenagers?

I guess it would depend on the interests of the teens. Places we recommend for anyone, would be Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Monument, Deadwood, Iron Mountain Road and, a bit further away, Badlands National Park. When our girls were teens, the older loved being out on the trails, while the younger would have been happier in the city shopping.

One caution — you probably would want to stay away during the Sturgis biker rally in August. We’ve accidentally ended up in the area twice and the number of bikes and bikers on the roads really reduced our enjoyment of the area.
