King Street, Charleston, South Carolina, urban architecture, June 10, 2012 (Seeking Indigo is a day spa)

We walked parts of Charleston’s King Street on two different days during our trip to South Carolina in 2012, one of them on Second Sunday, when the street is made pedestrian only, closed off to vehicular traffic for four hours.

King Street is One of America’s 10 Great Streets: College Urban Studies Experts Explain Why (The College Today, College of Charleston)

“King Street is where the historic architecture of the past provides the backdrop for present and future life,” says Barry Stiefel, historic preservation and community planning professor. “It is a captivating, four-dimensional place that encourages every generation’s appetite for social interaction.”

“King Street exudes how cities can evolve and stay true to their roots simultaneously,” says Deidre Carr, urban studies student.
